Damn, I don’t think I’d be able to take a selfie through the window like that, I wouldn’t fit. The CRJ Windows don’t open like that, either.

THE WINDSHIELDS ON COMMERCIAL AIRLINERS OPEN?!

How is this not a part that catastrophically fails all the time???

They pull in and slide back. So when the aircraft is pressurized, the window is pushed into the opening. Put another way, in flight, with the aircraft pressurized, you would not be able to open the window.

Ohhhhh. Okay, that’s much more sensible.

Boring. Show me one in the air and then maybe I’ll be impressed. /S

Does the /S tag mean, I’m being sarcastic right now? I’d heard of such a thing, but never seen it in use.

That woman’s pictures stop me in my track not because she is beautiful — she is — but because she is obviously enjoying the heck out of her job. A job that would be on my very short list.

Yes, /S means sarcasm.

The windows are also designed as an emergency exit for the pilots. They even have a rope they can put out the window to climb down.

I bet that tag is misused at times when /I for irony would be more appropriate.

The flight station on a C-5 Galaxy is something like thirty feet off the ground. They have an egress system with a bar you grab that has a spool of thin steel cable that lowers you to the ground.

Pffft.

This one is real, though. This is Bertrand Picard piloting the Solar Impulse, which recently completed a circumnavigation of the globe.

Along the same line, the emergency egress hatches over the wing are pulled into the fuselage, then turned sideways and chucked out through the resultant opening. All of the doors, hatches and windows are larger than the opening and the pressure helps hold them closed, not unlike a tire’s innertube patch.

They designed the aircraft with a hole just for the selfie stick.
